Through these services the Initiative will be able to engage a broad range of financial institutions, including commercial banks, investment banks, venture capitalists, asset managers, and multi-lateral development banks and agencies – in a constructive dialogue about financing the SDGs. The services will help promote a holistic integration of sustainability considerations into all aspects of the financial sector’s operations and services and help foster private financial flows to SDG serving entities and programmes.

Expected duration

The duration of the contract should be for 6 Months from 1 November 2017 to 30 April 2018. (The contract is renewable).

Duties and Responsibilities

The Geneva-based UN Environment Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a strategic public-private partnership between UN Environment and the global financial sector. UNEP FI works with approximately 220 financial institutions, which are signatories to the UNEP FI Statement of Commitment, and a range of partners and organisations, to understand today’s sustainability challenges, why they matter to finance, and how to actively participate in addressing them. Through its work streams and global outreach UNEP FI carries out its mission to identify, promote, and realise the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practice at all levels of financial institutions’ strategy and operations.

Started in 2015, the UNEP FI work stream on Positive Impact Finance provides a platform for financial institutions interested in working collaboratively with solution providers, programme initiators and a wider community of stakeholders to develop a vibrant positive impact market and address the funding gap for sustainable development, most notably in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UNEP FI needs a communications specialist to provide dedicated communications and engagement support to its Positive Impact Workstream. He / she will work in close collaboration with core Communications team

Objectives, output expectations and performance indicators:

UNEP FI’s workstream on Positive Impact is an integral part of the Initiative’s efforts to fulfil its mission to “identify, promote, and realise the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practice at all levels of financial institution operations”. By developing a common understanding of what constitutes positive impact finance and working with members and their clients, and with public parties on the development of new business and financing models, the workstream is a central contribution the mobilisation of mainstream finance for the SDGs.

The objective and final result of the consultant’s work will be the consolidation of strong UNEP FI sub-brand via the Positive Impact initiative.
In line with the work programme delivered during the UNEP FI Annual General Meetings and under the direct supervision of Careen Abb, Programme Lead for the Positive Impact initiative, as well as the overall supervision of Eric Usher, Head of Unit, UNEP FI Secretariat, the consultant will deliver the following outputs:
• A global communications and outreach strategy for the Positive Impact initiative that has clear objectives, messaging and transmission channels for each target audience.
• Impactful and fit-for-purpose / targeted communication materials/tools: flyers, slide-decks, web sites, newsletter, videos, social media, etc.
• Strategic partnerships with relevant fora, media and personalities, to build internal and external visibility and increase interest among key stakeholder groups.

Specific tasks and responsibilities:

Working closely with UNEP FI’s Communications team, the consultant will provide assistance in the following project/tasks for UNEP FI’s Communications work:
• Assist in planning and convening outreach events to promote the Positive Impact initiative as appropriate.
• Assist in identifying and reaching out to potential members and partners for the Initiative.
• Produce media advisories / press releases and arrange press conferences / interviews for key events and deliverables of the initiative as appropriate.
• Produce and/or edit text for relevant media on the Positive Impact initiative and/or topics relevant to the initiative.
• Develop/implement a social media strategy for the initiative.
• Monitor and support the Positive Impact community’s (members, Partners) communication on the initiative.
• Identify and monitor relevant fora, initiatives, events and media (mainstream and sustainable finance-specific) dealing with/ promoting (private sector) sustainable development / SDG finance with a view to consolidating strategic partnerships and building up the Positive Impact community.
• Develop and maintain communication / outreach materials for the initiative (e.g. audience-specific slide decks, flyers, videos etc.)
• Produce a Positive Impact newsletter.
• Maintain the Positive Impact web pages.
• Manage Positive Impact contributions to UNEP FI and wider UN communication tools and channels such as newsletters, slide-decks and events.
• Assist in the establishment and use of key tracking and performance indicators (e.g. web and social media metrics).
• Assist in providing editorial support – including copy-editing and proof-reading for the initiative’s main documents and publications
• Manage production process for the initiative’s main communication materials, documents and publications (design, printing, video production, etc.)
• Manage PI database and mailing list.
• Participate in key Positive Impact member meetings (Quarterly Coordination meetings, Working Group meetings).
• Perform other tasks, as necessary.


• Communications plan, in particular as regards social media, is established.
• Organization and management of the communications for at least 3 x regional PI events is undertaken.
• PI publications are all duly edited, produced and communicated to relevant audience via relevant channels
• PI database and mailing list are maintained
• Two newsletters are delivered.
• Communications materials and products developed for two stakeholder categories.
• Media database, Media Monitory Reports, and Press Engagement are all undertaken.

Qualifications/special skills

Skills: Exceptional proven writing and editing skills; Strong interpersonal skills; Persuasive; Networker; Ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multicultural and geographically dispersed environment; Good understanding of the finance sector and proven familiarity with sustainable finance concepts and trends; Ability to cope with heavy work loads, multiple and diverse projects in an organized and timely manner; Attention to detail; IT proficiency, including wordpress; Up-to-date proficiency with communications best practices, including social media; Pragmatic, creative, resourceful and tactful rather than ideological; Team player, motivated and optimistic.

Academic Qualifications: Master’s Degree in one of the following or related areas: communications, international relations, business administration, economics, finance, public relations.

Experience: At least five years working experience in communications, advocacy or network management/facilitating roles, with at least 3 in relation to the sustainable finance agenda.

Language: For this position fluency in English is required. Fluency in French and in other languages is considered an advantage.
