Sustainable Infrastructure: valuing the cost of risks and the costs of emerging risks

Governments, investors & citizens continue to debate the added value of Sustainable Infrastructure. Join us on 19 March to discuss the SAVi methodology, valuing economic, social & environmental risks’ costs & how these affect projects across life cycles.

 

Human Rights & Environment

The 40th Session of the Human Rights Council (HRC40) is ending this week in Geneva (follow live on UNTV).

Key points on environment included the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Environment presentation of report on the right to breathe clean air (A/HRC/40/55 available online), and the Norway resolution on Environmental Human Rights Defenders.

 

2019 Regional Forum on Sustainable Development for the UNECE Region

The Regional Forum on Sustainable Development follows up on and reviews the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the UNECE region. Various events are taking place during and in the margins of the forum, including:

 

30th Anniversary of the Basel Convention

The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal was adopted on 22 March 1989. A special event will take place to mark its 30th anniversary.

 

 World Forest Day (21 March)

The International Day of Forests 2019 is commemorated under the theme 'Learn to Love Forests'.  It underscores the importance of forestry education (both scientific and traditional) at all levels in achieving sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation. Check below the activities proposed by UNECE, FAO & PEFC Int on Thursday.

 

World Water Day (22 March)

The theme for World Water Day 2019 is ‘Leaving no one behind’. To commemorate the day in Geneva, a pivot event will be hosted at the Palais des Nations on 19 March. During the event, the United Nations World Water Development Report 2019 will be launched and the winner of the Stockholm Water Prize announced (Program for download).

 

World Meteorological Day (23 March)

World Meteorological Day theme for 2019 is 'The Sun, the Earth and the Weather' and reflects the core purpose of WMO and the essential role of National Meteorological Services (NMHSs) in monitoring the Earth System in order to deliver daily weather forecasts and advise policy makers about climate variability and change. WMO will celebrate World Meteorological Day on Friday, 22 March 2019 at its headquarters in Geneva.
